Studio Soundproofing

Preventing outside noise intrusion into a recording space requires the use of several materials to be effective. Building soundproof wall, floor and ceiling assemblies require attention to structural and airborne noise transmission to create a proper recording environment. STC (sound transmission class) is one of the measurements utilized in calculating the level of noise reduction of a wall, floor or ceiling. Although this is somewhat obsolete standard, it is still the most widely recognized term used within the acoustics industry.

With a few exceptions, sound energy can only be blocked by the addition of mass and through isolation /decoupling of hard surfaces. Materials such as mass loaded vinyl barrier and sound isolation systems such as resilient channel still provide the most effective soundproofing package. Other considerations such as cavitational resonance, door soundproofing and HVAC noise also need to be addressed when designing and constructing a studio environment.
